The House of Zessen, founded in 1510, is Alkmaar's oldest existing almshouse. It was intended for six old Catholic men. As a final destination, the building was part of the town hall complex. The facade was renovated in the 19th century in neoclassical style. Inside, there are several rooms in neo-Renaissance style: the main hall (1910) and the regent's room (1922).
The hofje, a national monument, is located in the center of Alkmaar in the Schoutenstraat between the Langestraat and the Laat.
