The Huis van Zessen, founded in 1510, is Alkmaar's oldest remaining court. It was intended for six old Catholic men. As a final destination, the building was part of the town hall complex.
The facade was rebuilt in the 19th century in neoclassical style. The large empire windows and the block plaster date from that time. Inside are a few rooms in neo-Renaissance style: the great hall (1910) and the regent's room (1922).
The hofje, a national monument, is located in the center of Alkmaar in the Schoutenstraat between the Langestraat and the Laat.
The building has been renovated inside and out into a unique building with eight apartments. A number of them will retain the monumental status.
This is the 2-room apartment on the second floor, accessible via the central hall and two stairs. Through the entrance you enter the living room with French doors and a beautiful view of the Grote Kerk. There is a separate bedroom and an open kitchen. This is equipped with built-in appliances: fridge with freezer, dishwasher, ceramic hob with extractor and a combi microwave. The bathroom has a shower, sink and toilet. There is a connection for washing machine and dryer.
