The Huis van Zessen, founded in 1510, is Alkmaar's oldest surviving courtyard. It was intended for six old Catholic men. As a final destination, the building was part of the town hall complex.
The facade was renovated in the 19th century in neoclassical style. The large Empire windows and the block plastering date from that time. Inside are several rooms in neo-Renaissance style: the great hall (1910) and the regent's room (1922).
The hofje, a national monument, is located in the center of Alkmaar in the Schoutenstraat between the Langestraat and the Laat.

A sleeping corner has been created on the other side of the kitchen-bathroom set-up. This apartment has a private terrace at the rear.
